Palamu is a district in north-western Jharkhand, with its headquarters at Medininagar (formerly Daltonganj). Known for forests, hills, and history, it is home to the Palamau Tiger Reserve, Chero-era forts, waterfalls, and rivers.
Betla National Park & Palamau Tiger Reserve

Jharkhand’s only national park and tiger reserve, spread over 226 sq km. Home to elephants, deer, leopards, langurs, and diverse birdlife. Tigers are rare, but the forest and wildlife make it worth visiting.
Palamu Fort
Inside Betla, ~3 km further • 15–20 min drive
Two ruined forts built by the Chero dynasty. The newer fort was built by Raja Medini Ray and later used by the East India Company during the 1857 revolt. Atmospheric and historic, though paths are rough.
Lodh Falls (Budha Ghagh)
~120 km from Daltonganj • 3 – 3.5 hrs
Jharkhand’s tallest waterfall at 143 m, best viewed between August–March. A hidden gem with a short forest walk and fewer crowds compared to Ranchi’s falls.
North Koel River
Located in Medininagar • 5 – 10 min
The city’s lifeline, perfect for sunsets and evening strolls along ghats and bridges like Shahpur and Redma.
